چکیده

Oxygen isotope data from ancient sedimentary rocks appear to suggest that the early Earth was significantly warmer than today, with estimates of surface temperatures between 45 and 85 degrees C. We argue, following others, that this interpretation is incorrect-the same data can be explained via a change in isotopic composition of seawater with time. These changes in the isotopic composition could result from an increase in mean depth of the mid-ocean ridges caused by a decrease in geothermal heat flow with time. All this implies that the early Earth was warm, not hot.A more temperate early Earth is also easier to reconcile with the long-term glacial record. However, what triggered these early glaciations is still under debate. The Paleoproterozoic glaciations at approximately 2.4Ga were probably caused by the rise of atmospheric O2 and a concomitant decrease in greenhouse warming by CH4. Glaciation might have occurred in the Mid-Archaean as well, at approximately 2.9Ga, perhaps as a consequence of anti-greenhouse cooling by hydrocarbon haze. Both glaciations are linked to decreases in the magnitude of mass-independent sulphur isotope fractionation in ancient rocks. Studying both the oxygen and sulphur isotopic records has thus proved useful in probing the composition of the early atmosphere.

1 Ecosystems and Climate

When viewed from space, Earth is seen as a blue marble. The dominant features of the planet are the blue of the oceans and the white of the clouds traversing the atmosphere. It is an image of fluids – water and air – in motion. Indeed, the study of Earth’s climate is dominated by the geophysical principles of fluid dynamics. With closer inspection, however, one can discern land masses – the con...

Precambrian evolution of the climate system.

Climate is an important environmental parameter of the early Earth, likely to have affected the origin and evolution of life, the composition and mineralogy of sedimentary rocks, and stable isotope ratios in sedimentary minerals. There is little observational evidence constraining Precambrian climates. Most of our knowledge is at present theoretical. Factors that must have affected the clima...

Principles of Planetary Climate

This book introduces the reader to all the basic physical building blocks of climate needed to understand the present and past climate of Earth, the climates of Solar System planets, and the climates of the newly discovered extrasolar planets. These building blocks include thermodynamics, infrared radiative transfer, scattering, surface heat transfer, and various processes governing the evoluti...

Early Mars Climate Models

It is often stated that Mars and Earth had similar environmental conditions early in their history and that life might therefore have originated on Mars as well as on Earth. However, the atmospheric conditions required to produce and sustain a warm, wet climate on early Mars remain uncertain. State-of-the-art greenhouse models predict global mean surface temperatures early in Mars' history that...

High Earth-system climate sensitivity determined from Pliocene carbon dioxide concentrations

Climate sensitivity—the mean global temperature response to a doubling of atmospheric CO2 concentrations through radiative forcing and associated feedbacks—is estimated at 1.5–4.5 ◦C (ref. 1). However, this value incorporates only relatively rapid feedbacks such as changes in atmospheric water vapour concentrations, and the distributions of sea ice, clouds and aerosols2. Earth-system climate se...
